The Golf Home Pro’s Top 10 Golf Courses in Sarasota/Bradenton

The Golf Home Pro’s Top 10 Golf Courses
in Sarasota/Bradenton

With more than 30 thriving golf communities in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, golfers looking to play year-round where they live will find a full roster of excellent options, with homes priced from the $100s to the millions.  All these neighborhoods have something to recommend, but here are my picks, based on a combination of golf course quality and real estate value.  I’ve added a few great golf courses with no homes around them to round out the Top 10.

Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club
You’ll live large within Lakewood Ranch’s 8,500 master planned acres that stretch across former farmland.  First, Lakewood’s size gives it the heft to attract a full range of commercial services and entertainment establishments, all of them designed to fit the popular new urbanism, or village center, concept.

Also, no conceivable amenity is left out, and the 54-holes of golf sport pedigrees that include the Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus design shops.  (Rick Robbins learned honed his craft in the Nicklaus firm.)  Large enough to have its own zip code, Lakewood Ranch is just 15 minutes from the Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport and a mere 20 minutes from downtown Sarasota.

Laurel Oak Country Club
Having celebrated its silver anniversary a couple of years ago, the private Laurel Oak, mere minutes from downtown Sarasota, can boast the experience of middle age and the laid-back attitude of a community that knows it offers as much as any other.  That starts with two exceptional golf courses designed by modern architects Gary Player and Rees Jones and tucked inside the community’s 800 acres; but the community’s respect for the history of the game is obvious even in its street addresses that include Perry Maxwell and Alistair Mackenzie Drives.  Non-golfers will find their own stimulation in a full-size heated pool, a dozen HarTru tennis courts and privileges at a local yacht club.  All residents gravitate toward the large and impressive clubhouse, encompassing 45,000 square feet of good food and friendly meet ups.  Laurel Oak’s large estate homes, many affording great views of the golf course,  and its open spaces emphasize the notion of privacy and luxury.

The Oaks
No golf community in the Sarasota area can claim a richer history than The Oaks, the former home of Bertha Honore Palmer, a Chicago socialite who made her home on 80,000 acres, including 1,000 on the Little Sarasota Bay.  Her lavish estate was a magnet for some of the most famous artists, business leaders and politicians of the early 1900s.  Today, her portrait hangs in the 40,000 square foot clubhouse that is central to the community and the jumping off point for 36 holes of splendid Willard Byrd golf.  With a full roster of resort-like amenities, residents of The Oaks can understand how pampered those turn of the century guests felt.

Palm-Aire Country Club
Those looking for an established and stable golf community with 36 holes of golf by two noted Florida architects, Joe Lee and Dick Wilson, need look no further than Palm Aire.  Active adults will be especially pleased with the long roster of “society” clubs in the community, including book club, garden club and yoga club.  The list of amenities is long too, including tennis, a well-outfitted fitness center and a large swimming pool.  Most of all, the real estate is varied, with townhomes and single-family homes organized in a logical fashion and reasonably priced.

Founders Club
The Founders Club is the essence of private country club living.  In recent years, the community was recognized by Parade of Homes for Best Amenities, Best Entranceway and as the Best Overall community.  With barely more than 200 homes slated for full build out and with prices beginning around $900,000, Founders can lay claim to being one of the most exclusive golf communities on the Gulf Coast.  No tee times are required on the private Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout because the golf membership roster does not exceed 275.  Moreover, for those who enjoy golf the way it was played traditionally, Founders features the only traditional caddie program in the Sarasota area.

The Concession
One of the legendary gestures in golf inspired that name and the spirit of The Concession, one of the Sarasota area’s most elegant golf the concession resize 233x334communities.  In 1969’s Ryder Cup competition at Royal Birkdale, the USA’s Jack Nicklaus conceded a three-foot putt to England’s Tony Jacklin on the 18th hole of the final two-ball match, resulting in a halved match between the two teams.  (Nicklaus had just sunk a five-foot putt and the halve of the match retained The Cup for the Americans.)  That act of sportsmanship, controversial at the time, brought the two competitors together years later to co-design The Concession Golf Club, whose challenging layout has been the site of a number of national golf tournaments.  The surrounding 1,200 acres reflect the spirit and graceful nature of the golf course itself, with large and beautifully appointed estate homes currently listed from the low $1 millions.  At full build out, just 236 homes will grace The Concession.

Prestancia
You can play where champions played at Prestancia, past host of 13 PGA golf tournaments including a Senior Tour stop for 13 years.  Built by the PGA Tour itself in 1985, today’s members of the private Prestancia have access to more than 150 other TPC courses around the country and Pacific Links clubs across the globe.  The Stadium Course, host to the American Express Invitational presented by Business Week, was designed by the noted architect Ron Garl, with an assist from former PGA Tour great Mike Souchak; the Club Course is the work of another top architect, Robert Von Hagge and another tour great, Bruce Devlin.  Prestancia features a wide range of home options, with prices from the mid $300s to a little over $1 million.

Longboat Key Club
Reaching like a long finger into the Gulf of Mexico, Longboat Key is a little bit of paradise for those who love beach sand and love the challenge of avoiding bunker sand.  Both elegant and full of vigor, the resort has plenty to occupy its residents, including 45 holes of gulf-side golf, a widely hailed tennis program, a half dozen restaurants on site and virtually every other amenity active adults and the younger set count on.  With condos that start below $200,000, that long finger is within reach of anyone looking for a vacation home or permanent place with outstanding beach and golf.

Outside The Gates: Golf Courses without Homes

Here are two excellent choices in the area for those who prefer their golf beyond the view of houses.

Ritz Carlton Sarasota
Noted golf architect Tom Fazio must love bulldozers. At The Ritz, he commissioned the movement of almost 1.9 million yards of earth that created an uncharacteristic Florida golf course, which is to say one with changes of elevation amid 12 lakes and rolling landscapes.  Located within the sprawling Lakewood Ranch community, The Ritz course has been celebrated by Golf Digest with a “Best in State” ranking (2011-12) and by Golf World as one of the “100 Best Golf Shops in the U.S.” (2010).

Sara Bay
For golf history buffs, there may be no better place to play than Sara Bay.  The course was designed by golf architecture’s legendary impresario, Donald Ross, in 1925, and has been lovingly restored twice in the last 25 years, both times by noted Ross expert Brian Silva.  The greens at Sara Bay, according to Silva, mimic those at perhaps Ross’ most famous layout, Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina.  The famed golfer Tommy Armour once told Golf Magazine that playing at Sara Bay helped his game; of course, the fact he played most days with Bobby Jones probably helped his game as well. Sara Bay’s layout is as fresh today as it was at its opening 90 years ago.
